Getting started
From download to your first automated click in a few minutes.
1. Open OtterTap
Put OtterTap.exe in any folder and double-click it. There's no installer. If Windows shows a "Windows protected your PC" message, see the download page for what it means.
2. Make a profile for your game
At the top of the window, click New and name the profile after your game. Everything you set up from here on is saved to this profile only. See game profiles for more.
3. Choose what to automate
OtterTap has three tools. Use one or any mix of them.
| Tab | Use it to |
|---|---|
| Clicker | Click the mouse on a timer. Guide |
| Keys | Press a key on a timer. Guide |
| Triggers | React when a picture appears on screen. Guide |
For a first try, leave the Clicker on its defaults. It clicks about once a second, wherever your mouse is.
4. Check your hotkeys
On the Hotkeys & limits tab you'll see two keys that work while your game has focus:
- F6 starts and stops OtterTap.
- F8 is the emergency stop. It always works.
You can change either to another function key. If a game already uses one of them, pick a different one.
5. Start it
There are two ways:
- Start button. OtterTap counts down for 3 seconds (you can change that) so you can switch to your game and put the mouse where you want it.
- Hotkey. With your game in front, press F6. It starts immediately.
The bottom of the window shows what's happening, for example "Running" and a count of clicks and key presses so far. Press F6 again (or F8) to stop.
6. Set a limit (recommended)
On the Hotkeys & limits tab you can stop automatically after a number of seconds, clicks or key presses. It's a good habit so a run never lasts longer than you meant.
If something isn't working
- Nothing happens in the game: make sure the game window has focus, and try a different start key.
- It clicks in the wrong place: some games lock the mouse to the centre of the screen. See the FAQ.
- Still stuck: contact us with your Windows version and the game.
